Dr. Neborsky is a psychiatrist in private practice in Del Mal, California, and a clinical professor of psychiatry at UCSD School of Medicine and UCLA School of Medicine (Hon)
He served on the Board of Directors of IEDTA (International Experiential Dynamic Psychotherapy Association) and was a founding editorial committee member of the International Journal of Short-Term Dynamic Psychotherapy. He is currently a guest editor of the journal Ad Hoc Bulletin of Short-Term Dynamic Psychotherapy. In 2003, the UCLA School of Medicine clinical faculty honored Dr. Neborsky with the 2002 Distinguished Psychiatric Lecturer award. In 2003 he was elected president of the Southern California Society for IS-TDP, which he also co-founded.
Dr. Neborsky received the Jacob Finesinger Award in Psychiatry from the University of Maryland School of Medicine, where he was a student. He did his residency at Emory University School of Medicine, where he in turn received the Hope Skobb Memorial Award. He served in the United States Navy as Director of In-Patient Psychiatry at Balboa Naval Hospital. He then joined the UCSD School of Medicine full-time as an assistant professor of psychiatry responsible for emergency services and medical student internships. He served briefly as director of studies in psychiatry.
Dr. Neborsky has published, with David Janovsky as co-author, a significant study on the treatment of acute psychosis with high/low dose haloperidol, as well as articles on the use of pharmacotherapy and psychotherapy in the treatment of depression. In 1981, while training with Dr. Habib Davanloo, he co-founded the San Diego Institute for Short-Term Dynamic Psychotherapy. Dr. Neborsky is also the co-author of Short-Term Therapy for Long Term Change (2001, published by W.W. Norton & Company) and author of Healing Trauma (2003, published by W.W. Norton & Company). In 2010, he published his edited books, The Collected Writings of Robert J Neborsky, MD (a second edition is in print, published by Tasora Books) and The Collected Writings of Josette ten Have-de Labije (published by Itasca Books). In 2011 he published Mastering Intensive Short-term Dynamic Psychotherapy: A Roadmap to the Unconscious (published by Karnac Books), which he co-authored. Dr. Neborsky trains professionally in the Attachment – Based ISTDP approach, which he develops and presents at local, national and international symposia. He is currently training in Denmark (Arhus), Germany (Berlin), Canada (Calgary) and the Uk (London).
